Cri du chat, which is caused by the deletion of part of the ~ of chromosome 5. 'Cri du chat' means 'cry of the cat' in French; the condition was so-named because affected babies make high-pitched cries that sound like those of a cat.

The beta-globin gene is found on the ~ of chromosome 11 (11p15.4) (Thein, 2005, p. 650). 'Although more than 200 beta-thalassemiaalleles have been characterized, population studies indicate that about 40 account for 90% or more of the beta-thalassemias worldwide.

Human chromosomes contain five nucleolar organizer regions (called NORs), located on the ~s of the chromosomes 13, 14, 15, 21, and 22. In humans, each NOR contains approximately one hundred tandemly repeated rRNA gene copies. The NORs of different chromosomes typically come together in interphase.

A centromere is a constricted region of a chromosome that separates it into a ~ (p) and a long arm (q). During cell division, the chromosomes first replicate so that each daughter cell receives a complete set of chromosomes.

Centric fusion: Fusion of the long arms of two acrocentric chromosomes [13,14,15,21,22] into a single chromosome having lost the ~s at the same time. Most often occurs as 21/21, 13/14, and 14/21 translocations.

What did these animals do with long feathers on ~s? One suggestion comes from some remarkable fossils of oviraptorosaurs preserved in the Cretaceous sediments of the Gobi Desert. The skeleton of the animal is hunched up on a nest of eggs, like a brooding chicken.

Submetacentric (SUB-met-uh-CEN-trick) chromosomes have a centromere that is off-center, so that one chromosome arm is longer than the other. The ~ is designated 'p' (for petite), and the long arm is designated 'q' (because it follows the letter 'p').
